We finally got around to going to visit the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. It's been on our 'things to do in Kansas' list for a while. We took a little 2ish mile hike to start off our adventure.
It was pretty hot. It's the prairie so shade was very sparse. Here we are taking a break and helping the girls not feel so pooped. Silly faces always make things better.
And we're off again.
Madelyn got to climb a fence.
At the end of our hike we got to visit a little old one room school house. It was in operation from 1886-1930. The school teacher rules were pretty funny. My favorite one was male teachers were not allowed to get a haircut at the barber shop.
Ready for school!
A little way down the trail from the school house was an old ranch house that is open to the public. It felt more like a plantation house. It was very magnificent and pretty ahead of its times! There was a bath room (just a bath, no toilet) that could have hot water pumped up to it and a refrigeration room in the basement for keeping perishable items cool. My favorite part was that the outhouse was a three seater. One of the seats was a child's seat. The whole family could go potty together! We need that here.
We got to visit the barn too.
Madelyn tried her hand at lassoing a cow but managed to get herself instead.
Rory succeeded in catching his cow.
Our Jr. Rangers.
After our big hot hike we were pretty hungry so we had a nice little picnic on the house lawn.
Family choo choo train.
Madelyn got to say hello to a horse as we left. It was a fun family adventure!
